Third grade students from Washington Local Schools in Ohio will meet with TEAL-SHIPS researchers and send cups to be crushed on January’s “Fin-tastic Cruise #5“!
November 2025
Third grade students from Chardon Local Schools in Ohio are learning about “Why scientists study the ocean”.
Seven classrooms sent questions for the TEAL-SHIPS Cruise #4 participants to answer. The kids also sent styrofoam cups they have colored for us to crush by sending to the bottom of the ocean! Oceanographers crushed the foam cups once the cruise was at the deepest station by filling a net with the crafts and tying the net to the CTD rosette which was sent down to the ocean floor for water collection. The immense pressure of the ocean pressing down on the cups caused them to shrink. Coloring cups is a fun activity to help the science team stay sane and bond and the resulting “crushed cups” are like a trophy for oceanographers!
We interacted with the students from:
- Mrs. Dinko’s Class (Munson Elementary)
- Mrs. Burress’ Class (Munson Elementary)
- Mr. Buemi’s Class (Munson Elementary)
- Mrs. Woodrow’s Class (Munson Elementary)
- Mrs. Gillette’s Class (Park Elementary)
- Mrs. Force’s Class (Park Elementary)
- Mrs. Whiting’s Class (Park Elementary)
